Permanent exhibition
Even today, the Ritterhaus Bubikon tells a lot about its history as a former commandery of the Order of Saint John, also known as the Knights Hospitaller. From the permanent exhibition with the collection of weapons to the library, there are interesting things to discover for young and old.
As the best preserved former commandery of the Order of Saint John in Switzerland, the Ritterhaus Bubikon is of historical importance. During a tour of the various permanently accessible exhibition areas, visitors can explore the historic building and immerse themselves in past times.
Experiencing the museum
The permanent exhibition provides a wide range of information on the history of the Knights of the Order of Saint John and the history of the commandery. In the herb garden you can learn more about the use of plants in different epochs. The tour “Seafaring, Cinnamon and Swallowtail” is specially made for children and adolescents.
Collections of arms Johann Jakob Vogel
Johann Jakob Vogel (1813–1862) was born into an old Zurich merchant’s family and collected antique weapons such as halberds and swords. He contributed around 220 of these finds to a foundation that has been on display in the Ritterhaus Bubikon since 1947.
Library
The library’s collection includes works from the 16th century to the present day and deals in particular with the history of the Order of Saint John. Among them is the most important work by Johannes Stumpf: the richly illustrated topographical and historical chronicle of the Old Confederation of 1547/48 with more than 400 woodcuts. The Swiss theologian, cartographer and historian Johannes Stumpf was prior in the Bubikon commandery from 1522. After becoming acquainted with Huldrych Zwingli, he joined the Reformation movement and introduced it to Bubikon.
