From arnica to sugar root – which spice used to be the favourite in the kitchen and which herb was one of the most common remedies? Our herb garden, structured by epochs, reveals how different the various plants were used over time.
For thousands of years, humans have been using the various effects of plants, for example to season and preserve food in the kitchen. Herbs are particularly important as a cure for diseases and for increasing personal well-being. Until the development of modern pharmacology in the 19th century, no other medicinal products were available and natural herbal substances were needed.
Meanwhile, natural products are back on trend. But what is now considered a medicinal herb may have had a different function in the past. Since plants have several properties, their intended use has also changed throughout history. Accordingly, the herb garden in the Ritterhaus Bubikon is divided into four historical zones – Antiquity, the Middle Ages, early modern times and the present – and explains how the herbs were used in each period of time.
